Behind the scenes of a commercial artist’s life involves thinking about Christmas months and months before most folk do and I promised myself this year that I would take the time to create some handprinted grift wrap, just for me to use to wrap gifts for my loved ones.
Christmas can often feel overwhelming and rushed. The frantic last-minute shopping, the endless to-do lists, the sensory effect and the pressure to make everything perfect can drain the holiday of its magic. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This year, I’ve decided to reclaim the joy of Christmas by slowing down and savouring the preparations. And I invite you to join me on this journey, starting with a simple yet profound act: creating handprinted gift wrap for the people you love.
The idea of hand-printing your own gift wrap might seem ridiculous at first, especially if you’re not naturally inclined towards crafts. But the beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and the genuine thoughtfulness it embodies. It’s about taking a step back from the commercial frenzy and reconnecting with the essence of the holiday season—love, creativity, and personal touch.
Here’s how we can make this truly special:
Start Early, Embrace the Process: By beginning our preparations in the summer, we give ourselves the gift of time. There’s no rush, no looming deadlines. We can enjoy the process, experiment with different designs, and let our creativity flow. Imagine a leisurely afternoon in July, with sunlight streaming in, as you sit down to craft your gift wrap—no stress, just pure joy.
Create with Love: Each sheet of handprinted paper carries with it a piece of your heart. It’s a tangible expression of your love and care. When your friends and family unwrap their gifts, they’ll see not just a present, but the time and thought you put into making it special. This small gesture can make a big difference, turning a simple gift into a cherished memory.
A Family Affair: Involve your family in the project. Let it be a fun summer activity where everyone can contribute their own ideas and designs. Kids will love the chance to get creative, and it becomes a beautiful way to spend time together. These moments of shared creativity and laughter will become some of your favourite memories.
Personalised Touches: Add personal elements to your designs. Incorporate family jokes, symbols, or messages that only your loved ones will understand. This personal touch makes the gift wrap even more special and shows just how much you care.
By slowing down and embracing the joy of making, we can transform our experience of Christmas - that’s my plan anyway! It’s not about the perfection of the gifts but the love and thought that goes into them.
Right, I’m off to print more Rudolfs, so I can be proper chuffed with myself come the season!
Thanks for joining me ❤️ Sam x
